In this writer’s personal opinion however… I think you should come over here and join in the party! For those who aren’t familiar with Songkran, let me enlighten you.
Songkran is celebrated every year in Indochina countries as the traditional New Year’s Day from the 13th to the 15th of April. The name Songkran comes from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘passing’ or ‘approaching’.
The traditional water pouring is meant as a symbol of washing all of the bad away and is sometimes filled with fragrant herbs when celebrated in the traditional manner.
People think Songkran is about getting wet and having a good time, and it is! However there is also a deeper meaning behind it. The tradition role of splashing and throwing water in Songkran is symbolic of washing away the misfortunes that have occurs in the past year so that we can welcome in the new with a fresh clean start.
This started by bathing Buddha statues in water and by doing the same with family and friends wherein people would pour water on the heads of other to wash this bad luck away so that we can start a fresh! However being a fun loving nation this tradition grew somewhat into what is now described as the biggest water fight on the planet!
If you’re in Thailand between the 13th -15thof April, expect to get wet! Literally the whole nation will be at war (in a fun celebratory sort of way) from pretty much the whole week! Though Songkran is traditionally 3 days, it usually lasts a little longer! But to be honest, this isn’t a bad thing, the month of April sees the hottest month of the year here in the Land of Smiles and bucket of water tipped on your head is actually very refreshing! Most Thai who live in neighboring provinces outside of Bangkok will bomb burst and head back home to celebrate with families but there’s always plenty willing to party in Bangkok!
Two big locations for foreigners to go for a Bangkok Songkran are Khaosan Road and Silom! There’s gridlocked streets full of party animals armed to the teeth with huge water guns and flour! There’s pickup trucks armed with water cannons carrying young people throwing water at locals and tourists alike. There’s plenty of street food available, good music to be heard and fun to be had! Check out all Thailand Tours

Outside of Bangkok a great place to visit during this festival of fun is Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is home to one of the country’s biggest Songkran celebrations in the world, the Chiang Mai Songkran Festival. The festival kicks off slightly earlier on the 12th April, with an eye-catching procession around the city. Street food, cultural celebrations and traditional performances are also an important part of Songkran in this part of northern Thailand. Of course, there’s also the customary water fights and flour going around!
Without a doubt, Songkran is a hugely important festival in the Thai Buddhist calendar but it’s also very popular with visitors and many tourists will specifically plan their holidays around this unique event. Anyone and everyone can and will get involved in this immense celebration of cleansing. If you’re out and about during Songkran, you’re almost guaranteed to end up soaked but you’ll have a great time and feel cool doing it!
